IEEE POTENTIALS 0278-6648/09/$26.00 © 2009 IEEE Few people consider the complexity of power grid operation when they flip a switch to light a room. Power grids provide electricity to billions of individuals around the globe, often with higher than 99.9% reliability. Because the social structures in most developed countries rely on high-reliability electricity, massive social disruption can result when the power grid fails to deliver energy to customers—urban transportation systems grind to a halt, heating and cooling systems stop, computer systems shut down, and vital services like water, sewer, and communications quickly degrade. In some cases, blackouts can uncover major social unrest, as occurred in the 1977 New York City blackout, which led to widespread rioting and the arrest of more than 3,000 individuals. In order to better understand how others perceive electrical blackouts, we asked students at the University of Vermont to share their blackout stories. The following are two particularly insightful responses: I think many people are in the dark about blackouts, specifically regarding what to do when one happens and perhaps more importantly what not to do. I know as soon as the lights go out and the summer heat rises, the first thing that goes through my mind once the power comes back is to turn on my air conditioning Cascading failures in power grids

Distributed monitoring for the prevention of cascading failures in operational power grids

Electrical power grids are vulnerable to cascading failures that can lead to large blackouts. The detection and prevention of cascading failures in power grids are important problems. Currently, grid operators mainly monitor the states (loading levels) of individual components in a power grid. The complex architecture of a power grid, with its many interdependencies, makes it difficult to aggre...

Reciprocally altruistic agents for the mitigation of cascading failures in power grids

Cascading failures in electrical power networks often come with disastrous consequences. A variety of schemes for mitigating cascading failures exist, but the vast majority depend upon centralised control architectures. Centralised designs are frequently more susceptible to communications latency and bandwidth limitations and can be vulnerable to random failures and directed attacks. This paper...

The Impact of the Topology on Cascading Failures in Electric Power Grids

Cascading failures are one of the main reasons for blackouts in power transmission grids. The topology of a power grid, together with its operative state determine, for the most part, the robustness of the power grid against cascading failures. Secure electrical power supply requires, together with careful operation, a robust design of the electrical power grid topology. This paper investigates...

Performance and reliability of electrical power grids under cascading failures

The stability and reliability of electrical power grids are essential for the continuous operation of modern cities and also critical for preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation in emergence management. Due to the fact that present power grids in China are usually running near their critical operation points, they are vulnerable and sensitive to disturbances from natural and man-made ha...

Cascading Failures: Extreme Properties of Large Blackouts in the Electric Grid

Introduction On August 14, 2003, at 1:42pm a power grid operator at the US Midwest Independent System Operator remarked, casually, to an operator at Louisville Gas and Electric, “Hey, what is going on man?” [1] Two and a half hours later, 50 million people across the Northeastern US and Southeastern Canada had lost access to power from the electric grid (see Figure 1). Three years later, on Nov...

Load-based cascading failure analysis in finite Erdös-Rényi random networks

Large-scale cascading failures could be triggered by very few initial failures, which lead to serious damages in complex networks. This paper presents a load-based cascade model to analyze the vulnerability of a complex system such as the power grid under a random single-node attack, where the Erdös-Rényi (ER) random graph is used as the network model since it captures the exponential degree di...
